AM BRIDGE
Location: Amsterdam
Programme: Iconic pedestrian bridge
Status: Competition
Year: 2011
Client: [AC-CA]
Area: 2000 m2
Team: Jacco van Wengerden, Gijs Baks, Milda Grabauskaite, Mark Westerhuis
We participated in the [AC-CA] competition for a pedestrian bridge, crossing the Amstel river, in front of the Hermitage Museum in Amsterdam.
By extending the Amstel river banks on both sides of the bridge, lazy promenades are created. The café and its sunny terrace are integrated in the abutment of the bridge on the bank in front of the Hermitage Museum.
On the opposite bank a bicycle repair shop, a covered bicycle parking and an area for boat mooring are integrated. By adding a 45 metres high watch tower on the bridge, fantastic, public accessible panoramas over the city are provided.
This tower will become a new attraction. Since the river is still used as the main shipping route through the city the bridge needs to be open-able. The lift bridge counterweights are positioned in the tower.
Amsterdam will have a new water square. The public accessible banks, ramps, bridge and tower provide perfect spectator stands for events on the water. The programme on both banks activates urban life. The bridge creates the opportunity for a boat mooring area on the shaded bank of the river.
The sunny south eastern site remains free for leisure activities. The shiny cladding of the proposal contrasts strongly with the surroundings, simultaneously it reflects these surroundings and vanishes in it. It reflects the history and refers to the future.
