Atelier van Wengerden is an architectural and design practice that develops striking and original concepts via a powerful combination of creativity, careful materials selection and attention to detail. Based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Atelier van Wengerden has successfully delivered numerous residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
The practice is led by Jacco van Wengerden, who proceeds via a non-linear way of thinking to arrive at unconventional solutions. The results seem self-evident but at the same time they have an element of surprise through structures and forms that work on multiple levels. He has no interest in short-term visual effect. His designs are simple and clear and the solution for every project is tailored and context-specific, taking into account all parameters and ambient factors.
Van Wengerden firmly believes the architect should be a fully engaged partner, not a remote expert imposing solutions based on a rigid philosophy or this year’s trend. Thus he is deeply involved with every part of the project, from initial immersion in the client’s needs to the final details.
His approach is based on deep research and analytic design; answering the questions presented by the site, the purpose and materials to create buildings and spaces that are both distinctive and effective.
Crucially, van Wengerden has a deep knowledge of construction techniques and materials and his respect for every stage of the building process enables him to maximize the technical possibilities of each project.
The quality of materials is paramount and he draws on expert external parties to access the latest materials and techniques for areas such as installed interior structures and exterior finishes.

"We were looking for an architect who could make something big from something small, with an eye for detail. Jacco fulfilled all these criteria. He listens to the client’s questions, and is a real fiend for detail. In addition he watched the budget very closely and takes a sharp interest in all dealings with external suppliers. We expected a long process in terms of building permits, but thanks to Jacco’s patience, tenacity and flexibility, our proposal was approved by the building commission without delay. As well as being a good architect (we receive compliments every day for the design of our shop) Jacco is a real pleasure to work with. And after project completion he was always willing to provide further advice."
